The core secret of solar panels lies in the "photovoltaic effect". When sunlight shines on semiconductor materials (usually silicon), photons with energy higher than the semiconductor bandgap are absorbed, exciting electrons to jump from the valence band to the conduction band, generating electron-hole pairs.
Under the built-in electric field of the PN junction, electrons are pushed to the N region and holes are pushed to the P region, forming a potential difference. When the external circuit is connected, electrons flow through the external circuit to generate direct current, completing the process of converting light energy into electrical energy. A single silicon-based cell can generate a voltage of about 0.5-0.6V, which can be connected in series to form a practical component with a voltage of 18V or higher.
