Pyrolysis and carbonization are both processes in which raw materials are heated to change their properties and chemical structure, but they have some important differences.
1. Purpose and process:
Pyrolysis: Pyrolysis is a process in which organic matter or certain inorganic matter is heated in the absence of oxygen to decompose it into simpler compounds or elements. This usually involves thermal decomposition under high-temperature conditions, during which the chemical structure of the raw material undergoes large changes, producing gas, liquid and solid products. Pyrolysis usually does not involve adding other materials, but rather breaking down the raw materials at high temperatures.
Carbonization: Carbonization is a process of converting organic matter or some carbonaceous materials into carbon under high temperature conditions. During the carbonization process, the carbon in the raw material will be enriched, while other elements such as hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, etc. will be gradually eliminated. Carbonization usually involves high-temperature conditions and the raw materials are carried out in an oxygen-deprived environment to ensure the formation of carbonaceous material.
2. Application fields:
Pyrolysis: Pyrolysis is commonly used for the preparation of biomass charcoal, charcoal, char, liquid fuels and the decomposition of some organic compounds. It has wide applications in the production of biochar, coke, liquid fuels and some chemicals.
Carbonization: Carbonization is commonly used to prepare activated carbon, carbon electrodes, carbon fiber, carbon black and some other carbonaceous materials. It has a wide range of uses in the production and application of carbon materials.
In general, pyrolysis is a process that breaks down raw materials into simpler compounds, while carbonization is a process that converts raw materials into carbonaceous materials. Their application areas and conditions vary, so which process is chosen depends on the desired end product and chemical reaction conditions.
